Project Idea Description
Active since December 2020, the SOREVA Association works to support the reuse and valorization of local construction materials, particularly those from building sites. The goals of the association are to:
-support the circular economy, reuse, recycling, reutilization and recovery of waste, particularly on the scale of Greater Geneva and in the field of construction and building sites.
-Promote the development of collaborative approaches as a goal and means of integrating the greatest number of actors.
-To raise awareness of and promote the use of local resources.
-Mobilize and support professionals in the construction and architecture sector and institutions by identifying their specific needs.
-Implementing digital tools and professional services for awareness raising and networking.
-To implement other activities that directly or indirectly meet the goals of the association.
Our flagship project is reuzi.ch a digital and collaborative platform to disseminate and promote best practices on reuse to encourage the exchange of construction materials from one site to another.
What problem would you like to solve?
Environmental issue: the project is part of a global and local context of climate change and the shortage of natural resources. Given that the construction sector is the largest producer of waste in Switzerland (Journal Suisse des Entrepreneurs N°4 14.4.2021, “Ces déchets peuvent devenir de précieuses ressources”), there is a real problem to be addressed.
Local need: in view of the national aspect maintained by the materiO project, a platform for the exchange of construction waste developed by the ASR in collaboration with the OFEV, the Reuzi.ch project responds to a real need for relay on a more local scale.
Management and storage problem: the observation of a coordination and organization problem expressed by the companies echoes in the need to set up an automatic coordinated management from one site to another and not only at an internal or small network level.
In this respect, the development of the Reuzi.ch project aims to create a digital and collaborative platform to disseminate and highlight good practices on reuse with the purpose of promoting the exchange of construction materials from one site to another, in particular concrete from deconstruction and earthen materials from excavations.
Who are the customers and how will they profit from a solution?
The implementation of the project will provide construction actors with an unprecedented application which federates all the stakeholders on the construction production chain - owners, engineers, architects, building companies - on the same user interface.
Strategic partners and (potential) co-funders for development and reach future users
- ASR - Swiss Recycling Association (national level)
- CGGD - Commission for Global Waste Management (local level)
- GESDEC - Cantonal office for soil and waste management, Ecomat program (local level)
- SIG - Services Industriels de Genève (local level)
- Geneva municipalities (local level)
- SSE - Société Suisse des Entrepreneurs (local and national level)
- SIA - Swiss Society of Engineers and Architects (local and national level)
- OU - Office de l'urbanisme de l'Etat de Genève (local level)
- CPEG - Caisse de pension de l'Etat de Genève (local level)
- OCBA - Office cantonal des bâtiments de l'Etat de Genève (local level)
How does your project idea affect energy savings or CO2 emissions?
In Switzerland, the building sector is responsible for 30% of greenhouse gas emissions, i.e. 14 million tons of CO2 equivalent. 7% is linked to building materials, i.e. 980,000 tons. 70% of the impact comes from imported materials. With the reuzi application, local materials from reuse and recycling are highlighted. By reducing the use of foreign materials by 10%, we can imagine saving up to 100,000 tons per year.
Also, reuzi.ch accompanies players in the construction production chain to develop more ecological and sustainable construction methods that effectively reduce the ecological footprint for the supply and use of materials.
The Reuzi.ch project aims to give building sector stakeholders a central place not only in the concept and development of the digital tool, but also as partners in supporting the ecological transition and in changing our professions.
What has been tried before?
Before concretely launching the project, it seemed appropriate to meet the future user community in order to present the concept of a materials exchange service. As a result, we contacted a wide range of actors who showed interest in the project and made more than 200 contacts :
- Architects
- Construction companies
- General company
- Gravel pit
- Civil engineer
- Environmental engineer
- Geotechnical engineer
- Institution
- Project owner
What was not successful?
Almost all of the people contacted expressed an interest in the future service. However, in order to be convincing in the promotion of the project and credible to the different actors, it appeared that it was more than essential to have a functional tool to present. Indeed, the absence of a functional prototype turned out to be a barrier to the realization and real communication of the project.
What have you learned?
Although the project has raised a lot of interest among future users, the lack of information about the use of recycled and reused materials is to be taken into account. Indeed, it is more than important to raise awareness beforehand in order to anticipate good practice.
Planning and budget
