Project Idea Description
Ausgangslage und Problemstellung
The education system often relies on canonicals data storage and identity management systems. This aspect is also compounded by the new direction that education is taking around the world, based on skills and micro-degrees rather than grades and certifications. Microdegrees are a single manifestation of Competency Based Education (CBE) which seeks to tie credentialing to specific skills sets (G. Rogers, 2015), so instead of awarding degrees based on past individual exam grades, "microdegrees" is defined as the idea of awarding degrees based on competencies and skills.
But how to solve all this?
Self-Sovereign Identities (SSI) is a technology that has already been researched for years, and it bases its idea on digital identities that are managed in a decentralised manner. In this case, the student, perhaps through a wallet, will be the one who will hold personal data and identity to the school.
Problemstellung
What is required for schools to implement this SSI upon their existing infrastructure? Is it possible to use SSI for the Competency Based Education (with creation of microdegrees)?
Ziel der Arbeit und erwartete Resultate
The idea and aim of this project is to demonstrate the capabilities of an SSI infrastructure in education by demonstrating the process of creation of micro-degrees. This will be achieved through a small Proof of Concept (PoC). The PoC will cover the classical infrastructure of the SSI, in specific, implementing the "VC Trust Triangle" (User, Verifier and Issuer). The idea is to implement a solution that is based on an existing SSI framework. Depending on the time and resources available, it would be possible to extend research on the decentralisation of the trust with regard to issuers and verifiers.
Gewünschte Methoden, Vorgehen
The methodology chosen for this project is: Extrapolative / Problem-method-solution. In detail, the steps are:
- Analysis
Assessment of technologies currently in use and solutions presented to date.
- Evaluation
Assess which solution is best suited to be implemented or proposed for the Swiss education system.
- Realisation
The implementation phase involves building a PoC demonstrating the functioning of the infrastructure.
Kreativität, Varianten, Innovation:
As possible extension of the project, is providing a solution for the "centralised trust". So the question to answer will be: "How to ensure this (consensus) without there being quasi-monopolies (e.g. Google Chrome Truststore)?".
Also, it would be possible to cooperate with a school/institution in order to evaluate any practical results of the project
Concepts such as Self-Sovereign Identity (SSI) and Bring your own identity (BYOI) have become highly topical in the field of privacy and identity management. On the other hand, there is a tendency in the education field to talk more and more about Microdegrees and MicroMasters to innovate and adapt learning to the modern era. Hence, the idea and aim of this project is to demonstrate the capabilities of an SSI infrastructure in education by demonstrating the process of creation of Microdegrees
