Project Idea Description
Blok-C
Blok-C will offer solutions to digitize the construction industry (CI). A business sector with a seemingly intractable productivity problem.
WHY?
- Failure to adopt new technologies resulted in the CI losing $1.6 trillion in 2017 (1)
- Since 1964, CI productivity has seen an annual decrease of 0.32% mirrored by non-construction sectors which increased 3.06%. (2)
Approximately 75% of all construction processes are deemed as non-value adding (3). The remaining 25% is broken down into two categories: 15% is regarded as essential, non-value-added work and only 10% is regarded as value adding. (4) In short, the industry has an interoperability problem. Numerous, non-standardised, disparate systems result in inefficient, disjointed and/or duplicated processes. Currently, project stakeholders must deal with multiple data silos. This necessitates the need to manually manipulate and port data from system-to-system. Which is prone to error and leads to untimely and/or incomplete data which significantly impacts on-site productivity, delays bids and is the root cause of frequent miscommunication --- all of which contribute to a highly inefficient (and costly) approach to construction management.
In addition, the construction industry has one of the largest and most complex supply chains, despite this the technology and processes in place are not standardised and lack traceability. As a result, materials arriving on site and the resulting works are not assured to meet requirements as set out in the contract in terms of quality, performance, cost, and time. Even with today’s wealth of Project Management tools, coupled with generations of building experience, project costs can deviate above by up those budgeted by as much as 30%.
HOW?
The Blok-C project aims to solve these issues by standardising & digitizing manually executed administrative tasks and normalizing data to create a chronological, actionable, transparent, and immutable digital asset. Whereas the current processes allow improper or incomplete handling of key tasks / project stages Blok-C aims to maximise safety along with improvements in efficiency, quality and cost control by exploiting the aforementioned transparent, chronological, immutability inherent in Blockchain technology thus regimenting the userbase in following the correct protocols.
Furthermore, the solution will span the full lifecycle of the building from project inception, through design and construction and beyond encompassing local authority approvals, key certifications, ‘as built’ design drawings, building manuals, materials specifications and much more – giving huge efficiency gains in the running of the building (maintenance, refurbishment) and playing a key role in the rental, sale and ultimately the demolition of the building.
Blok C will benefit all stakeholders in each of the key stages in the lifecycle of a building, from designers, through to Local Authorities, construction management companies through to construction contractors, from building owner to real estate agents, and from maintenance contractors to demolition experts. Everyone will experience increased efficiency gains and / or improvements to the user experience.
The Blok-C project will be built around existing standards and protocols such as COBie, ICMS data standards, BIM protocols as well as existing standards and protocols that are native to the Hyperledger platform.
We are currently exploring the NFT (Non Fungible Token) technology, which would make perfect sense for projects built on the Blok-C platform. All info can be stored on the token, and transferred from contractor / developer to owner – and later in the building life between building owners
In conclusion, we believe our solution will do to the construction industry what Google Maps did to traditional paper-maps.

Construction is one of the least digitized industry sector resulting in unnecessary low productivity. We, Blok C, aim to digitize construction projects from inception to the end of it's lifecycle, boost productivity by creating a smart and standardized project management & supply chain tool and store data and contracts immutable on blockchain.
Blok C is a startup by 2 construction experts at its humble beginning with a vision to interrupt the construction industry.
