Challenge Description
We address the challenge to highly reduce Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions of nonwovens that are currently used for thermal or acoustic insulation. We want to tackle this through polymers which have zero or negative GHG emissions and which allow full circularity of the polymers composing the nonwoven.
More specifically, the polymer(s) used in such nonwoven should respect the following criteria:
- Cradle-to-gate life cycle assessment of the polymer granulate(s) shows zero or negative GHG emissions
- Spinability. It should be possible to produce filaments or staple fibers having < 50 microns diameters out of such polymer(s).
- Recyclability. The polymer(s) can be recovered and recycled, i.e. extracted from the used nonwoven and respun into filaments or staple fibers. The recycled filaments or staple fibers should provide the same mechanical properties as its 100% virgin equivalent.
- Preferably we would look at polymer(s) with properties that can be compared to polyester, polyamides or polypropylene.
Implementation Partner: Autoneum
