Challenge Description
During the production of polyurethane adhesives and sealants a certain amount of waste is generated. This waste is flushing material from colour or product changes at the production or packaging lines. The waste is uncured of a pasty consistency and will cure with humidity to an elastic polymer.
The material can be grouped in two categories:
Waste from sealant production:
- Cures with humidity
- Filled paste of “low” viscosity (Nutella like)
- Colours manly white and grey but currently not separated
- Lower mechanical properties
- Shore A hardness in the range of approx. 20-40 after curing
Waste from adhesive production:
- Cures with humidity
- Filled paste of high viscosity
- Highly filled with carbon black, therefore only in black colour
- Higher mechanical properties
- Shore A hardness in the range of approx. 40-60 after curing
The production waste is collected in 200L steel drums with plastic inliner.
As the waste is currently incinerated, we are looking for a more ecological way of disposal or for an application where the material can be reused.
