💡Did you know? Plasma Center de l’EPFL💡

Did you know that the @Swiss Plasma Center (SPC) is at the forefront of nuclear fusion research in Europe? 🏆

Long before the alarm bells were ringing about climate change, the @EPFL was already looking for a clean, safe and potentially inexhaustible source of energy. In 1961, the school opened the Plasma Physics Laboratory, now the @Swiss Plasma Center.

The @Swiss Plasma Center (SPC) at EPFL is a key player in the global quest for fusion energy, heating gases to over 100 million degrees Celsius in its own variable-configuration #tokamak reactor (TCV). This intense heat, which resembles the core of the sun, creates a plasma in which atomic nuclei collide, paving the way for sustainable energy production. The distinctive characteristic of the TCV is that it can be used to test different forms of plasma.

With around 200 researchers, technicians and students constantly innovating new tools for plasma control, SPC is instrumental in projects like @ITER, an international effort towards fusion energy. Collaborating with European agencies like @Fusion for Energy and institutions like @Max Planck, SPC drives fusion R&D forward.

Application of plasmas in industry covers important technologies and markets such as semiconductor manufacturing, packing industry, solar cell production, flat screen display manufacturing and tribology.
