According to the Patent Index 2024 by the European Patent Office (EPO), Switzerland filed a total of 9,966 patent applications β up from 7,116 in 2015.
π With 1,140 applications per million inhabitants, Switzerland takes first place worldwide, driven by sectors like medtech, biotech, measurement and electrical machinery.
π In absolute numbers, Germany leads in Europe and ranks second globally β just behind the USA.
Switzerland takes third place in Europe and seventh globally.
Positions 3 to 6 are held by Japan, China, South Korea and France.
