bluefactory Fribourg transforming into a sponge city district

Because of global warming, cities have to realign themselves. The sponge city concept helps to mitigate the effects of heavy rainfall. This is responsible for up to two-thirds of the flood damage. Water and its circular management are at the core of bluefactory's enhancement project. The Mobiliar Cooperative is contributing 400,000 francs to the water transition at bluefactory, site of Switzerland Innovation park West EPFL.

The project phase, which is supported by Mobiliar, will be implemented gradually until 2027. The specific measures are aimed at managing heavy rainfall events, avoiding heat islands and raising awareness among the population of climate adaptation.

The first sub-projects:

✔️ Commissioning of an underground basin of 1,112 m³

✔️Creating a pond as a buffer zone

✔️Excavation of a retention ditch of 200 m³

✔️Expansion of green spaces

✔️Planting of roofs

✔️Setting up furniture made of recycled materials in public spaces.

The partnership complements the cooperation already initiated with the companies SINEF and Groupe E in terms of capitalisation of energy sources; this pursues the goal of meeting the needs collectively and centralizing production.
