Cement-free Cleancrete Oulesse - road to market entry

Project Idea Metadata

Project Idea Description

Oxara's overarching vision is to enable sustainable construction and promote affordable housing on a global scale. To accomplish this, we are committed to rethink current waste streams within the construction industry and addressing the issue of embodied carbon in building materials. Our approach centres on promoting circular economy practices, thereby contributing to an improved carbon footprint within the sector.

Central to our efforts is the development and provision of cement-free admixture and binder technology. Our products enable the conversion of existing waste materials derived from the construction industry into the production of sustainable concrete with significantly reduced CO2 emissions and reduced resource usage. By removing cement from the equation, concrete based on Oxara technology, known as "Cleancrete," offers the potential to reduce the material-based carbon footprint by a significant margin of 70 to 90% (depending on the binder/admixture and the base materials).

It is essential to recognise that the construction industry is a complex and interconnected network involving a multitude of stakeholders. Achieving substantive positive environmental outcomes necessitates collaboration across the entire value chain. This collaborative approach not only benefits the environment but also generates value for the parties involved and the broader public.

In light of this, Oxara actively engages with a diverse array of industry stakeholders, including architectural offices, engineering professionals, real estate developers, material producers, construction firms, academic institutions, investors, and public bodies. Cultivating and expanding this diverse collaborative ecosystem represents a key mission for Oxara. This enables us to introduce and establish our innovative products within the industry while simultaneously gaining insights from and sharing knowledge and expertise with the network.

Oxacrete Oulesse®:

Oxacrete Oulesse®, the most recently developed product of Oxara, is an environmentally friendly and circular substitute for traditional cement. It offers a sustainable and resource-efficient material solution that leads to a significant reduction of up to 70% in CO₂ emissions.

Oxacrete Oulesse is a mineral binder based on construction demolition waste and serves as the binding component for the creation of cement-free concrete known as Cleancrete Oulesse. This binder demonstrates strength development characteristics comparable to conventional cementitious binding systems. Moreover, Cleancrete Oulesse permits the utilisation of recycled aggregates and exhibits complete resistance to water penetration. Consequently, it emerges as an eco-friendly and resource-saving alternative to cement-based concrete, capable of satisfying standard compressive strength requirements up to C20/25 levels. Cleancrete Oulesse finds versatile applications across various construction contexts. It can be employed in an array of scenarios, including but not limited to load-bearing walls, floors, screed, mortar, tiles, earth stabilisation, cast elements, and porous concrete.

The product has successfully completed its internal development phase and is currently advancing into the stages of market validation and market entry. In collaboration with our industry partner, Kibag, Oxara is working on the preparations for market entry, which is planned for the first quarter of 2024.

Project goals within the CBI Booster funding:

Within the framework of the CBI Booster funding program, Oxara has delineated its project objectives, which primarily revolve around facilitating the market entry of the Oxacrete Oulesse binder and the corresponding Cleancrete Oulesse:

Project partners:

Kibag – Cleancrete Oulesse development and industrial validation

Prof. Dr. Robert Flat, ETH Zurich, Dep. of Civil, Env. and Geomatic Eng. – product development advisor

How do we intend to secure third-party funding (10% of the total grant amount)?

Oxara will raise the external funds of 2000 Swiss Francs through institutional fundraising or contribute from our own capital.

Oxara aims to revolutionise construction by promoting sustainable building materials and affordable housing. Our most recent product, the Oxacrete Oulesse® binder, is an eco-friendly alternative to traditional cement, reducing CO₂ emissions by 70%. Based on construction waste, it is used to create cement-free concrete for various applications. The Oxara team is currently preparing for its market launch that is planned for Q1 in 2024.
