Project Idea Description
Stadtufer Cooperative Reuse Workshops
We pitch for developing and executing a series of workshops centered on the theme of reuse in architecture. Hosted by the Stadtufer cooperative situated within a spinnery factory in Lichtensteig, these workshops are designed to foster reuse practices while revitalizing spaces of the factory with diverse functionalities. The cooperative exemplifies a commitment to circularity and community engagement through the utilization of salvaged materials, particularly in the construction of a theater and artist studios in the factory which are used currently. In 2022, the cooperative received a recognition award from SVSM (Die Schweizerische Vereinigung für Standortmanagement) for such commitment and is connected to a wider network in Europe with similar initiatives with similar aims. For instance, Nethood will be collaborating with ECOWEEK (https://ecoweek.org/) as a part of SINCERE project (https://sincere-project.eu/) through Stadtufer Reuse Workshops.
- The Problem
The interior spaces within the old spinnery factory needs to be revitalized by Stadtufer Cooperative by reusing materials. More specifically there are two spaces to be designed and built with reclaimed materials: an open atelier (623 m2) used by 15 artists, a housing part (624 m2) accommodating 20-25 individuals. There is a missing link in between the existing inventory of reclaimed materials, the architectural design of spaces, technical detailing and construction.
- For Who?
Members of the cooperative and people who inhabit these spaces in the factory will benefit from the workshop. Additionally the workshops will be open to anyone who wants to attend, potentially local residents in Lichtensteig.
- The Team
Stadtufer Cooperative is the implementation partner with the support of Wirkstadt Association. The Nethood Association will be the research and dissemination partner of the workshops.
The Stadtufer cooperative is transforming a former factory site in Lichtensteig into a future-oriented living, working, and cultural space, prioritizing social, ecological, and economic aspects to ensure long-term success.
NetHood, a Swiss nonprofit organization and dissemination partner of the project, was established in 2015 to facilitate information exchanges, collaborations, and interdisciplinary projects, while also developing Do-It-Yourself tools for empowering local actors.
The Wirkstadt association operates in a factory hall in Lichtensteig that comprises workshops, communal rooms and gardens. They have organized projects like Tiny Homes, ReUse warehouse, events, and a Brockenhaus project.
Workshop Organizers
E. Onur Ceritoglu - Dr. phil. In Urban Planning – Architect /Nethood
As a workshop leader, Onur aims to bring his practical and technical knowledge in reuse. His new book is about reuse practices in Turkey titled Salvaging Buildings (Transcript Verlag). Currently he prepares a reuse concept for Stadtufer Cooperative.
Dimitrij Stochhammer - Carpenter, Reuse-Expert - Stadtufer / Wirkstadt
Dimitrij, as the workshop leader, is a construction expert on reuse and built most of the parts of the Stadtufer and Wirkstadt with reclaimed materials.
Supporters
Dr. Panayotis Antoniadis - Ecosystem facilitator Nethood/ ETH
Dr. Ileana Apostol - Urbanist - Architect Nethood/ ETH
Daniel Fuchs - Architect - Stadufer / Bach Mühle Fuchs Partner*innen GmbH
Jonas Jakob - Stone mason - Stadtufer
Eric Honegger - Founder/Co-owner/Managing Architect/ in situ AG
- Impact on the Planet
We are planning to build nearly 1230 m2 within the factory as much as with reclaimed materials. The workshops will be a guideline to achieve our goals. The CO2 savings are important not only for the cooperative, but also through the workshops – prototyping, success stories as such. Its benefits and impact have a lot of potential in terms of its practical focus in a local level as a part of reuse movement.
- The Experience
Our workshop proposal focuses on the practical aspect of reuse. We have conducted a similar but more private process when we build the theater and artist studios in the building. We would like to use this opportunity to share our knowhow and bring people who really need to build their own interiors and built in spaces.
- The Proposal
With a well-established infrastructure consisting of metal and wood studios, we aim to organize five workshops that not only demonstrate the efficacy of reuse but also serve as a collaborative innovation.
Workshop Objectives
- To advocate for the integration of reclaimed materials within architectural frameworks, promoting their viability and ecological benefits.
- To impart practical methodologies for incorporating reclaimed materials into interior architecture, emphasizing their aesthetic and functional potential.
- To empower participants with comprehensive knowledge and hands-on experience in woodworking and metalworking techniques.
- To cultivate the culture of collaboration among cooperative members and locals.
- To document our collective journey and disseminate our insights through an open publication, thereby advancing the discourse on reuse in architecture.
Workshop Structure: Our workshop itinerary is delineated into five distinct modules, each elucidating different facets of reuse in architecture:
Inventory Preparation: Undertaking an inventory of salvaged materials stored within our storage, participants will catalog and evaluate each resource's suitability for interior design applications.
Material Hunting: In tandem with utilizing existing resources, participants will embark on expeditions to hunt for additional salvaged materials.
Prototype Development: Collaboratively conceptualizing and fabricating prototypes for various interior design elements—such as kitchens, walls, and built-in elements—participants will work with salvaged materials to come up with innovative design solutions.
Construction: With the help of experts in architecture and design, participants will use our wood and metal workshop to translate prototypes into tangible elements, thereby building the artist studios and housing spaces.
Documentation and Publication: Throughout the workshop series, documentation will be undertaken to map design and construction processes and technical details. Creating an open publication, these reflections will serve to inspire and inform a wider audience regarding the potential of reuse in architecture.
- How the Booster will be used
We are looking for workshop leaders who are experienced in reuse, inventory, DfD (design for deconstruction).
- The workshops will be facilitated utilizing the comprehensive array of tools and resources available within our wood and metal workshop.
- Practitioners in architecture, design, and sustainability will be invited to lend their expertise and guidance.
- A segment of the budget will be allocated towards material hunting to provide supplementary resources essential for project realization.
- The remaining budget will be appropriated towards covering workshop expenditures, including honorariums for instructors, inventory preparation, documentation and publication costs.
- We will establish an association which will be active in St. Gallen Katon, specifically in the Toggenburg region.
In joining our workshop series, participants will not only acquire invaluable proficiency in reuse in building practices and awareness of circular economy but also contribute to the spatial transformation of our local factory. We want to make a transformative proposal in order to highlight the importance of practical processes with reuse.
- The Third Party Funding
Nethood Association will provide the 10 % of the funding amount.
