Project Idea Description
The idea of the Mobility Transformation GmbH emerged from a collaborative research project involving the University of St. Gallen, the London School of Economics Cities Department, and Toyota Financial Services.
A key finding is that combining sustainable mobility concepts and real estate development projects is inevitable to achieve the climate goals for 2050. By seamlessly combining these fields, we can significantly reduce CO2 emissions from passenger transport, which currently account for 27% of Switzerland's emissions. Alongside, urban mobility challenges can be eased by the reduction of privately owned vehicles.
The Problem: Real estate developers fail to implement mobility concepts in large real estate projects. The research collaboration revealed that almost all investigated mobility concepts in new urban quarters were not or only partially implemented. Furthermore, its residents do not accept the sustainable alternatives to privately owned vehicles.
The research project included four studies. Each building upon the findings of the previous one.
- The future is rooted in the past: A historical analysis of Europe's leading cities, considering urban development, technological advancements, and socio-economic changes.
- Mobility concepts and measures: Investigation of mobility concepts in European cities and urban quarters and deriving mobility measures.
- Why mobility concepts fail? Interviews with real estate developers, mobility service providers, policymakers, city administrations, and consultants to identify success factors and challenges in planning, implementing, and utilizing mobility concepts and services.
- Mobility behavior and needs: A quantitative study, conducted in collaboration with urban quarters in Munich, Hamburg, and Vienna, exploring on residents' mobility behavior and needs.
The Solution: Based on the research findings, we will implement sustainable and innovative mobility concepts for real estate developers that address the identified weaknesses. The core idea is to integrate mobility services into the real estate industry and cities in a way that creates value for all stakeholders while promoting both economically and ecologically sustainable practices, as well as inclusive/social aspects. In addition, our solutions aim to reduce residents' dependence on private vehicles.
The Mobility Transformation GmbH will also lead and continue the research at the Urban Places Lab of the University of St. Gallen. Here, the transformation of parking areas and transportation infrastructure into sustainable uses will be researched as part of a Europe-wide study. In addition, the found solutions will be implemented in collaboration with industry leading partners like Roche and Schwarz Gruppe.
Why We Need the Support of the New Mobility Innovation Booster?
To establish ourselves as a permanent fixture in the Swiss mobility sector, we seek bridge financing and a partnership with the New Mobility Innovation Booster (NMIB). First, the bridge financing is essential for transforming our research into practical applications. It enables us to develop a digital toolkit for implementing evidence-based mobility concepts in urban areas. Second, the NMIB's extensive network of industry leaders, startups, and academics provides a unique collaborative platform. Moreover, partnering with NMIB enhances our credibility and attractiveness within the mobility sector. It signals market confidence and amplifies our potential to secure additional resources and customers.
By implementing our research findings, real estate developers and cities can not only enhance their attractiveness but also contribute to solving urban mobility challenges. Let's bring research to life and make evident based mobility solutions a reality.
