Project Idea Description
What problem would you like to solve?
SolarStream aims to tackle several pressing issues in the solar energy sector, specifically around the management and execution of solar projects. The primary problems include:
- Fragmented Software Ecosystem: Many solar professionals use disparate software solutions that do not communicate with each other, leading to inefficiencies.
- Manual Data Entry: Technicians and project managers frequently enter data manually into multiple systems, resulting in time loss and increased risk of errors.
- Inefficient Documentation and Communication: The manual process of filling out documents and communicating project status slows down project implementation and raises the chance of mistakes.
- Maintaining Quality and Standardization: The lack of standardization in processes and automation makes it challenging to adhere to quality standards and streamline workflows.
- Inconsistent Customer and Partner Communication: Fragmented communication channels lead to inefficiencies and can negatively impact customer satisfaction.
These pain points and inefficiencies were identified during our extensive market validation, conducted from December 2023 to February 2024. We reached out to over 20 companies, engaging them in open discussions about their most pressing challenges and the areas where operational time is most commonly lost. This underscores our commitment to close collaboration with our customers. The concept of SolarStream was directly shaped by feedback from these customer interviews, focusing on identifying and addressing specific, time-consuming challenges. Our approach exemplifies a solution-driven methodology, targeting real-world problems rather than retrofitting issues to pre-existing solutions.
Selected Quotes from our validation with SMEs and industry associations:
- 'I want to install solar, this is what we are good at. ' - Dieter Baumann, Managing Director, Sunconnect
- 'There is no solution which looks at the installation from a to z - that is a big problem.' - Fabio Giddey, Employee, Swissolar and former Solar Project Manager
- 'In an ideal scenario, we would proactively inform our customers, but there’s simply not enough time in daily operations.' - Fridolin Sprecher, Head of Energy/PV, Greencover
- 'The same information is copied ten times from one place to another—we desperately need a unified interface.' - Stefan Merz, Managing Director, Merz+Egger AG
- 'There a couple of solutions on the market but in the area of installation I do see a big black hole.' - Thomas Bachmann, Head of CKW Ostschweiz
Based on our market validation we came up with the concept of SolarStream, the central interface for solar installation teams in Switzerland. SolarStream is an end-to-end software solution tailored to streamline solar project management in Switzerland, specifically addressing the administrative burdens faced by solar installers. The platform integrates existing tools, automates data entry, and standardizes communication between project partners and customers, reducing administrative workload by up tp 90%.
The effectiveness of our customer-centric approach is evidenced by the positive feedback following the presentation of our MVP software, which was iteratively developed with customer input. All customers requested beta access, continue to engage with us regularly during feature planning, and have shown a willingness to provide advance payments for our future software product.

In addition to customer validation, our business model and approach have been endorsed by industry and academic experts. Christian Schaffner, Director of the Energy Science Center at ETH Zurich, recognizes significant potential in our approach. Walter Steinmann, former Director of the Federal Office of Energy, praised our strong customer focus. Pol Budmiger, an Innosuisse Startup Coach and Chairman of the Board at Eturnity, has noted a clear market demand for the integrated approach we offer.
But our vision extends beyond just efficiency. Our groundbreaking maintenance module is not only a game-changer for solar installations but also fuels cutting-edge research and innovation. Partnering with the Thurgau Institute for Digital Transformation, the University of Konstanz, and the University of Applied Sciences Konstanz (HTWG), we’re developing a predictive model that leverages voltage, current, weather data, and installation measurements. This model will anticipate potential system failures, enabling service teams to address issues before they arise and arrive on-site with all the right tools and parts from the get-go.
Who are the customers and how will they profit from a solution?
Our primary customers are small to medium-sized solar installation companies in Switzerland, which each handle 50 to 200 projects annually. These businesses often struggle with outdated or incompatible software systems, making SolarStream's integrated solution highly valuable. By consolidating project management into a single, user-friendly interface, SolarStream will:
- Reduce Operational Complexity: Streamline workflows and automate data handling, reducing manual entry and minimising errors.
- Improve Efficiency: Speed up project execution by integrating communication and documentation processes.
- Enhance Project Oversight: Provide a centralized overview of project status, making it easier to manage and track progress.
- Boost Customer Satisfaction: Improve communication and responsiveness through a unified platform.
Additionally, our solution will also benefit larger installation firms and service teams by offering a streamlined approach to managing multiple projects and maintaining high service standards.
Our predictive maintenance model will help customers to efficiently handle their service and maintenance activities. Thanks to suggested root causes for observed errors based on patterns in voltage and current data, the existing issues can be handled and resolved quicker and at lower cost by always giving recommendations for the spare parts which should be taken to the on-site visit. This increase customer satisfaction and the uptime of all monitored solar systems.
How does your challenge affect energy savings or CO2 emissions?
By improving the efficiency of solar project management, SolarStream indirectly contributes to increased adoption and effective operation of solar energy systems. Thanks to our efficiency increase our customers (based on 20% market share) will be able to complete an additional 4000 projects per year, corresponding to almost 10% of the overall annual projects in Switzerland and a reduction in CO2 of 2880 tons per year.
Furthermore, our predictive maintenance module will enhance system performance by forecasting potential issues and optimizing maintenance schedules. This proactive approach:
- Increases System Uptime: Ensures solar installations are running at peak efficiency, maximizing energy production.
- Reduces Waste: Helps avoid unnecessary repairs and replacements, which can be resource-intensive.
- Supports Sustainability Goals: Encourages the adoption of renewable energy solutions by making solar projects more manageable and efficient, ultimately contributing to lower CO2 emissions and promoting environmental sustainability.
Detailed calculations about the estimated impact on the saving potential for Switzerland and Europe can be found in the attachments.
Current Status and Previous Activities
What has been tried before? What was not successful? What have you learned?
Initially, we aimed to cover all relevant process steps ourselves. However, through customer interviews, we realized that this approach was not feasible with our resources and would position us as a direct competitor to existing solutions. As a result, we have shifted our focus to serving as an integrative interface, which allows us to enhance and unify existing solutions rather than compete directly with them.
Furthermore, we originally planned to implement a percentage-based pricing model. However, this model proved to be impractical. Instead, we have adopted a fixed fee per project, which, depending on the chosen tier, reflects approximately 10% of the time savings achieved through SolarStream. This new pricing structure aligns better with our customers' needs and simplifies the billing process, making it more transparent and predictable.
Further learning during our validation process
- Integration is Key: Combining various functionalities into a single interface greatly enhances operational efficiency and user experience.
- Local Adaptation Matters: Tailoring solutions to local regulations and market conditions is crucial for adoption and effectiveness.
- Customer Feedback is Essential: Engaging with customers throughout development helps refine the product to better meet their needs and ensures higher satisfaction.

What are your planned work packages? How can the Energy Lab help you?
Our next big milestone is the public Go-Live mid November, where we will be presenting our solution at the PV-Update - one of two annual meetups from the Swissolar associations with over 300 installation companies participating. In order to be ready for a public Go-Live we have three work packages identified, we want to focus on next:
- Security assessment and testing:
- Get an external assessment about the security of our software to identify potential vulnerabilities
- Get freelance support to complete automated end-to-end testing, a standard for SaaS but due to our limited resources and bootstrapping approach we could not finance this yet
- Migrate to a Swiss hosting platform:
- We want to be fully hosted in Switzerland to assure that no customer data leaves the country
- A need which has been identified during our customer interviews but is linked to costs
- Kick-Off the research project for our predictive maintenance module by training a first model
- Start collecting relevant data from service appointments and failure analysis
- Start correlating them with current and voltage data retrieved (Together with Thurgauer Institute for Digital Transformation)
