Project Idea Description
E^3 is proposing a large panel of basic educational ( school level) up to research and development ( university level) activities and projects concerning the ENERGY related issues lack and need of education based on ESYLab.
ESYLab is a multi-purpose system bringing solutions at a last spectrum of problems like :
- the lack of infrastructure laboratory both pedagogic and Ra&D in sustainable energy production energy efficiency, energy storage and energy security;
- need of meteorological multi-parameters and long-term studies vs. energy issues;
- environmental monitoring projects related to energy
The first prototype/demonstrator ESYLab 1.0 is a system based on a joint-venture between EnviroScopY SA and HEIG-VD is operational from 01.01.2023.
This is a mobile unit of about 2000 kg and 16 m3 able to produce 3, 2 kW peak energy by its variable geometry 16 m2 - 8 solar panels completed with some 800 W small wind turbine and a generator of about 60 kWh for energy and informatics fails security reasons. The energy storage is about 10 kWh based on lithium technology batteries (replacing in April 2024 the old Pb-Gel technology).
ESYLab is thermally isolated offering quite comfortable two places for operators/teachers day and night if necessary. Nevertheless the system is full automated and can be remote monitored and controlled. Inside ESYLab is equipped with computers , 3 D printer , thermal ecological printer and desk office for remote office work. ESYLab is also equipped with electric and mechanical tools.
The meteorological multi-parameters station is public and data is available online on the smart-phones. The complete data is archived too for R&D projects or various customers. Thus temperature, humidity, rain , wind speed and direction , solar UV and total energy , pressure direct measurements are used to deliver around 25 calculated parameters including those related to energy wind -solar production but also of energy management with direct involvement in the use as heat and air cooling systems on buildings (cool and hot day degrees values).
The analysis make by master level study on the ESYLab prototype by K. Belaire HEIG-VD estimates un average of 2000 kWh for one year 04.2023-03.2024 without any specific optimization based mainly on solar panels and some 30 kWh by wind turbine. The standard consumption for the ESYLab itself standard operative activities was about 250 kWh. Thus ESYLab can thus offer energy for other projects !
Many tests charging a hybrid car of about 10 kWh batteries were usefully done in a daily basis and systematically for electric bikes !
Examples of E^3 activities based on ESYLab:
- learning energy basics (units, types of energy , etc) using pedagogic kits
- presentation and understanding the ESYLab concept in detail
- using ESYLab : charging car, bikes , phones but also cooking , 3D printer, tools , etc
- related Ra&D project based like: new wind mill concept or automation of solar panel movement for maximum energy efficiency
- promotions and education on sustainable energy on festivals, events , institutions celebrations , ....
- outdoor R&D projects or pedagogical classroom
- use of meteorological data vs. energy efficiency and economy.
- challenges QCM probes and prices related to energy efficiency applications ( solar charges, timers , solar-dynamo radios, lamps etc...).
Important : ESYLab TEAM speakers will be composed by : students, university and school level professors both active and retired ans trying to offer the parity gender and also taking into account the public all around diversity !
To resume private individuals and companies as well as public governmental institutions and also associations /foundations are potential customers.
ESYlab is also a solution providing energy in the right place at the right moment avoids to develop extremely CO2 emission with huge financial costs by building energy infrastructure.
The present prototype may be considered like a mid-level but down-scaling or up-scaling up to a factor of two can be easily provided. Three ESYLab ( mini-med-max) versions will thus be proposed in the future to cover E^3 at larger regional scale.
As observation the our critical analysis show:
- the replacement pf lead -gel batteries with lithium is a clear critical advantage ;
- the mobile infrastructure can be based on recycled but also new adapted designs;
- the thermal transfer is critical issue to be addressed both on winter and summer time ;
Many short term work packages in order of their priority are listed below :
- Complete our basic educational kits as a factor x 6 x2 = for 12 people / group for 2x45 min activity ! - 5000 CHF
- Marketing (website !!! and social networks) and prices material for one year activities - Estimation 3 objects /group around 2500 CHF !
- ESYPAN- automatic system for solar tracking variable geometry panels 7500 CHF ;
- ESYOL - new innovative wind turbine solution - 2500 CHF ;
- RH: teachers and speakers, others to start the commercial activity 2500 CHF
Energy Lab can help as follows :
- direct co-financial contribution as described above;
- networking with similar or complementary educational projects ;
- making advertising for E^3 project by simply being the initial financial support to this so necessary societal project idea .
Important Observations concerning the Energy Efficiency of E^3 project :
- the variable angle (sun tracking potential) can improve up to to 40% of energy production vs. ref. vertical position;
- complete snow cleaning in winter time by increasing the slope up to vertical position (zero lost);
- easy systematic glass panels cleaning as 3m height is very accessible (5-15% gain).
NB : E^3 was tested as proof of concept as follows :
- in 2023 and 2024 at HEIG-Vd "portes ouvertes" ( 3 days full time);
- in 2023 at CPNV - Sustainable Week ( 5 days full time)
- in 2024 at VD8 camping - out of the school E^3 activities ( 08.08 to 30.09.2024 )
E^3 ( ESYLab for Energy Education) is a societal innovative project answering 360° all around the need / lack of education related to energy issues with indirect huge impact.
ESYLab is a recycled mobile infrastructure illustrating energy efficiency, storage, production, economy and consumption by a diversity speakers team.
E^3 is for :

- retired &associations
