Urban Places Lab – The Research Lab for Urban Transformation

Project Idea Metadata

Project Idea Description

The Urban Places Lab (UPL) is committed to enabling urban and mobility transformation. We implement innovative solutions for sustainable urban transformation and connect decision-makers from businesses, startups, politics, municipalities, associations, and academia.

The UPL serves as both a knowledge laboratory and a co-creation platform to launch sustainable transformation projects. In Basel, for example, we will partner with Roche, Basel Public Transport, and the city of Basel to transform a traditional parking garage.

Following an initial funding phase, our intention is to become a self-sustaining lab that will support unique transformation projects over many years. From our center in Switzerland (Switzerland Innovation Park East), we intend to host Europe’s largest database of urban transformation projects.

The UPL originated from the University of St. Gallen, which will continue to be a scientific partner of the lab. Doctoral candidates and students from the university will have the opportunity to put their academic knowledge into practice within the UPL.
