Project Idea Description
This project aims to revolutionize nitrogen management in farming by combining the innovative technology of Digit Soil AG with the expertise of Agroscope’s farmer network of Nutrient Fluxes Experimental Station of Lucerne (Versuchsstation Nährstoffflüsse VSLU). Using Digit Soil’s device, which measures soil enzymatic activity, we will provide farmers with precise data on nitrogen mineralization potential throughout the growing season, not just at the time of measurement. This will allow them to optimize fertilizer use, reducing nitrogen losses to water and air, which currently cause environmental damage and greenhouse gas emissions.
We will pilot the project with 25 farms in Canton Lucerne, analyzing soil samples from three fields per farm. The data collected will be used to refine Digit Soil’s model, enabling faster and more cost-effective measurements in the future. The results will be shared with farmers to see how it impact their decision-making. Additionally, a soil nutrient management score is being developed to connect farmers with consumers, promoting transparency and sustainable practices.
