Project Idea Description
Phytoaris is a sustainable and circular solution that is targeting Switzerland’s growing nutrient pollution caused by excess manure, while also mitigating climate change through carbon capture. It treats manure and wastewater by extracting excess nitrogen and phosphorus with fast-growing aquatic plants and then turning the plant biomass into biochar through pyrolysis. This unique approach not only prevents nutrient run-off, which is a major cause of water pollution and threatens ecosystems, but also alleviate the burden of manure surplus from farmers. The biochar generated can be applied to degraded soils to improve soil structure and increase nutrient availability, promoting long-term sustainable soil management. Additionally, biochar also sequesters carbon, thereby reducing the carbon footprint of the agriculture sector and helping Switzerland reach its climate goals.
With a circular, resource-efficient system, Phytoaris addresses the environmental, regulatory, and economic challenges faced by Swiss farmers while contributing to long-term sustainability in agriculture.
Phytoaris harnesses the power of plants to tackle nutrient pollution, improve soil health, and capture carbon to help mitigate climate change. By using fast-growing aquatic plants to absorb excess nutrients from manure and wastewater, it prevents nutrient run-off and pollution of water bodies. The resulting biomass is turned into biochar, which sequesters carbon and improves soil structure and fertility, addressing problems like soil compaction and erosion, while improving nutrient availability.
