Enhancing Data Reliability and Supply Chain Transparency for Sustainable Competitiveness

Project Idea Metadata

Project Idea Description

The growing regulatory and market pressure on the quality of Life Cycle Inventory (LCI) data highlights the need for reliable solutions that ensure transparency, traceability and control in the sharing and use of environmental information along the entire value chain. Yet these data are often heterogeneous, poorly structured and hard to exploit.

The project proposes the development of a structured assessment system that applies recognised quality indicators (such as the pedigree matrix) and, when necessary, complements gaps with carefully labelled synthetic data. This will give companies—especially small and medium-sized enterprises—a practical tool to raise the standard of their inventories and make decisions based on trustworthy numbers.

Beyond the static check of data quality, the platform will run an automated “data-gap scout” that highlights missing or weak spots in each inventory, shows their potential climate impact and sends simple, pre-filled requests to the relevant suppliers. A visual dashboard then forecasts how much the environmental footprint could improve once those gaps are closed, turning data quality into a business performance indicator that everyone can understand.

Finally, the resulting dataset will be organized in a Digital Product Passport-ready structure. The system will enable more efficient and controlled supply chain management, positioning data as a strategic asset to enhance regulatory compliance (ISO 14044, PEF) and the environmental visibility of products.

Increasing pressure on LCI data quality demands solutions that ensure transparency, traceability, and control across the value chain. This project introduces a structured system using quality indicators (e.g., the pedigree matrix) and synthetic data to fill gaps, helping especially SMEs build reliable inventories. An automated “data-gap scout” identifies weak spots, estimates climate impact, and sends pre-filled supplier requests. A visual dashboard shows potential footprint improvements, making data quality a clear performance metric. The output will be Digital Product Passport-ready, boosting compliance (ISO 14044, PEF) and environmental visibility.
