Project Idea Description
The Challenge
The European wind industry faces a massive waste disposal problem. Rotor blades are made of extremely durable glass and carbon fiber composites (GFRP/CFRP) that cannot be recycled through material-based processes. By 2030, the annual volume of waste in Europe is expected to rise to 55,000 tons. At the same time, an industry-wide landfill ban will take effect in 2026. Existing disposal methods, such as thermal recycling (incineration) in cement plants, are environmentally unsatisfactory and destroy valuable material structures.
Our solution: CircularBlades
CircularBlades offers a holistic upcycling approach that defines the end of a rotor blade’s life cycle as the beginning of a new product cycle. Instead of destroying the material, we leverage its outstanding properties—extreme durability, weather resistance, and aerodynamic aesthetics—to create new products for the B2G (business-to-government) and B2C markets.
The Business Model & Products
Our portfolio includes modular, scalable solutions:
• Urban furniture & infrastructure: Weatherproof park benches, bus and tram shelters, and bicycle shelters for municipalities.
• Landscape Architecture: Noise barriers and avalanche barriers.
• Design Objects: Exclusive, limited-edition furniture pieces for the private sector (B2C).
We are committed to a zero-waste goal (100% recycling): Scraps and parts that cannot be used directly are shredded and sold as high-quality filler material (secondary material) to the construction and cement industries.
Innovation: The Digital Product Passport
Every CircularBlades product comes with a Digital Product Passport (DPP). Via a QR code, users can access the object’s history: Which wind farm did the rotor blade come from? How much clean energy did it produce during its first life? How much CO2 was saved through upcycling? This creates an emotional connection, makes the energy transition tangible, and proactively complies with upcoming EU circular economy directives.
Who We Are Looking For
To take CircularBlades from the concept phase to implementation, we are looking for:
1 Seed investors: To finance the pilot phase, the construction of mobile disassembly units, and the first prototypes
2 Pilot customers (municipalities/cities): For the implementation of initial flagship projects in public spaces.
3 Technology partners: To further develop the automated cutting process and the blockchain-based product passport solution.
4 Wind farm operators: For strategic partnerships to secure a steady supply of materials.
The Team
Behind CircularBlades is Marcel Jost (founder, MBA student specializing in business development) in close scientific partnership with Prof. Dr. Christian Rytka (FHNW, expert in plastics engineering and GRP recycling).
Join us in shaping the circular economy of the energy transition!
CircularBlades transforms end-of-life wind turbine rotor blades into high-quality, durable infrastructure and designer furniture.
Every year, thousands of tons of non-recyclable rotor blades accumulate in Europe. We solve this problem with an innovative 100% recycling approach: The main segments are repurposed into weather-resistant urban furniture (benches, bus shelters, noise barriers), while residual materials are used as secondary raw materials in the construction industry. An integrated digital product passport (blockchain) makes the origin and the amount of CO2 saved by each object transparent. CircularBlades bridges the gap between the wind industry’s waste problem and the growing demand for sustainable solutions in public and private spaces.
