dimpora® BIO MONO

Project Idea Metadata

Project Idea Description

The outdoor and fashion industries rely on waterproof-breathable membranes made with PFAS and hazardous solvents. PFAS, often called “forever chemicals”, do not break down and are now found in water, soil, wildlife, and in people around the world. Solvents commonly used in membrane production, such as DMF, are classified as harmful to human health and contribute to polluted wastewater in manufacturing regions.

The challenge does not end at production. Most membranes today are made from multiple polymers and fluorinated compounds that cannot be separated or safely recycled. This means performance garments usually end their lives in landfills or incineration, where persistent chemicals continue to accumulate in the environment.

This combination of toxic production and non-recyclable materials is a key driver of the Novel Entities planetary boundary, where chemical pollution is increasing faster than society can monitor or manage. Without alternatives, the impact continues to grow globally and across supply chains.

dimpora® BIO MONO is a new kind of high-performance membrane designed to remove toxic chemicals from the system and make recycling truly possible. Instead of relying on PFAS or hazardous solvents, we use a clean, solvent-free manufacturing method to create a membrane that is waterproof, breathable, and safe. This means no persistent chemicals are released during production and no harmful substances are embedded in the final product.

What makes the solution especially effective is its simplicity. Most membranes and laminates are built from several different materials, making them impossible to recycle. dimpora® BIO MONO is made from compatible polymers, which means a jacket or garment using it can be designed as a mono-material. In practical terms, this allows brands to collect products at the end of their life and recycle them without disassembly or chemical separation, two barriers that currently prevent circularity.

The membrane is also made with over 60% bio-based content (the highest in the industry) from castor oil grown on non-food competing land, reducing dependence on fossil resources and supporting a more responsible materials supply.

By combining safety, simplicity, and high performance, dimpora® BIO MONO offers a practical and scalable alternative that allows brands to move away from the chemicals and material structures driving today’s pollution crisis.

The outdoor and fashion industries rely on waterproof, breathable membranes often made with PFAS (“forever chemicals”) and hazardous solvents. These substances persist in the environment, contaminating water, soil, wildlife, and humans. Most membranes also use mixed, incompatible materials that cannot be recycled, so garments end up in landfills or incineration, increasing chemical pollution.

dimpora® BIO MONO offers a new approach. This high-performance membrane eliminates PFAS and harmful solvents through a clean, solvent-free process, avoiding toxic emissions in production and use. Made from compatible polymers, it enables true mono-material garment design, allowing easy recycling without disassembly. With over 60% bio-based content from non-food castor oil, it also reduces fossil dependence while maintaining waterproof, breathable performance.
