Project Idea Description

The "Green Check Zug✔" study commissioned by the Zug Chamber of Commerce and prepared by OST Ostschweizer Fachhochschule shows:

In the canton of Zug, 560,000 tons of CO2 equivalent (tCO2eq) are emitted per year. Just under half of this is caused by industry sectors. They pollute the environment primarily with commuter, freight and commercial traffic, as well as heating requirements.

The study shows the biggest levers for improving the C02 balance in the canton of Zug.

Results are eye-opening: The economy is responsible for just under half of the CO2 emissions in the canton. The main sources are transport, with a share of 38 percent, and heating (heating and hot water), with 34 percent. These are also the biggest levers for improving the balance.

In a scenario analysis, the authors of the study calculated the reduction potential of certain measures such as the installation of photovoltaic systems or the expansion and new construction of district heating networks. The results show that in an ambitious scenario of four targeted measures, the economy can achieve a 14 percent reduction in emissions; in the maximum scenario, 27 percent is possible. In the case of transport, which is still the subject of the studies, initial estimates indicate that a 15 percent reduction could be achieved by switching commuter traffic to electromobility.

"After the rejection of the CO2 law, the industry is challenged even more"

The canton of Zug, with its many companies, has a special responsibility when it comes to the environment. In order to initiate the right measures, however, facts are needed. The Zug Chamber of Commerce creates these with "Green Check Zug✔. For the Zug Chamber of Commerce, one thing is clear: "Following the rejection of the CO2 law, the economy, as a major source of CO2 emissions, is all the more called upon to act on its own responsibility. There is a long way to go, but there are already many companies in the canton that are investing specifically in environmental protection measures. The Zug Chamber of Commerce is making these visible through the support of the OST University of Applied Sciences in the sense of best practice examples, and in this way would like to encourage other companies to invest in climate protection.

Companies contribute 50% of carbon emissions in the Canton Zug.

These emissions are primarily allocated to the sectors building, mobility and related to energy. To reduce the emissions, stakeholders must assess where and how to start best and adopt new and innovative measures. The challenge identifies & quantifies environmental impact and cost and proposes implementation scenarios to accelerate the reduction of carbon emissions in the Canton of Zug.
