Project Idea Description
Vehicle to Grid (V2G) uses batteries in plug-in electric vehicles (PEVs) as energy storage for the grid. The batteries in electric cars can be both charged from and discharged to the grid to provide grid services. Utilities can temporarily store (grid-to-vehicle, G2V) the temporary excess energy produced by power plants - especially the more volatile renewables such as wind and solar power - during periods of low energy demand, stabilizing the grid.
Unfortunately, V2G activities in Switzerland are still very modest. Especially in the area of possible business models and pilot projects, fundamental work is missing.
Based on the lack of scientific studies, we propose the following study contents to be able to creat possible business models in Switzerland:
1. ShortOutlook current V2X Grid projects (Switzerland, Europe, worldwide) incl. their use-cases (arbitrage, DSO services, load shifting, firm, secondary control power).
2. Potential estimation for storage in electrical vehicle in Switzerland.A potential estimation of bidirectional vehicle batteries as energy storage for the next 25 years shall be made for Switzerland
3. Actor environment for V2G services in the Swiss energy market. Which actors need to be considered for successful V2G services in Switzerland, what role would they take and what regulatory changes are needed.
4. Swiss-V2G business models: Identification of possible value chains, value propositions and revenue streams incl. attempt of quantification.
To show which V2G(H) business models could work in Switzerland and what the business case could look like.
6. Feasible business models in Switzerland
7. Proposal for a pilot project in Switzerland
Vehicle to Grid activities in Switzerland are still very modest. In the area of possible business models and pilot projects, fundamental work is missing. This project will fill the gap and will answer the following questions with Switzerland as focus:
- What is a theoretical framework that can be applied to V2G business models?
- What is the actor environment for V2G services in the Swiss energy market?
- Which V2G business models would be considered in Switzerland and what is the business case?
