Project Idea Description
This is a circular economy and social project absorbing carbon, while having fun!
Music and sustainability. Does that sound like, well, music to your ears? If we’re playing your jam, keep reading.
The way we listen to music impacts our environment. In fact, streaming music leaves a bigger carbon footprint than most of us realize. Unfortunately, despite the illusion of the cloud, like all digital products, streaming music isn’t carbon neutral. Keeping the servers and databases alive that makes it possible to enjoy our tunes wherever we are, means burning fuel.
Music has forever been a force for change. It’s the anthem of cultural revolution, transcending minds to move hearts. As artists, musicians play an essential part in crafting social change for good. But making a living as an independent artist is notoriously challenging.
Sometimes it feels impossible to reach the 487 million subscribers on streaming platforms so carving out a place to share their art can feel difficult. To be heard, musicians have to be visible, but this can be an uphill battle with so much competition.
But, streaming music and performing concerts has an undeniable impact on our environment. In fact, streaming music leaves a much bigger carbon footprint than most of us realize
Music that absorbs carbon using the principle of circular economy.
Stream by Stream will be a non-profit tackling climate change head-on. With the revenue generated on streaming platforms, Stream by Stream plants trees.
We partner with sustainable-minded musicians to curate playlists on popular streaming platforms like Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube or Deezer. For every 100 followers and 1000 streams of these playlists, a tree gets financed and planted. This way every stream absorbs approx. 100 grams of Co2. Does that not sound like much? The potential 100 million listeners will make the difference. (Assuming that in 5 years we have 17.5 Mil. listeners listening one playlist/month to our playlists we could absorb 2’600'000 tons of Co2 per year)
Maintaining a positive outlook on climate change can feel challenging, but Stream by Stream takes the complexity out of combating climate change. Reducing your carbon footprint shall get as simple as following, liking, or listening to these playlists. Meaning you can give back to the environment from your couch, at your office, or while enjoying a summer BBQ. Streams equal trees planted.
About the partner musicians and their commitment
Stream by Stream was founded by the band Citrus Hues, two musicians who saw the opportunity to give back to our environment while helping fellow artists thrive. As a musician carving out a place on streaming platforms is difficult when they are up against huge record labels. They also thought about a solution to maintain the artists independence.
Stream by stream wants to unite all these environmental minded artists of every genre under one single brand name and enable them to share their fan base with the fan bases of all other artists within this community. This is done through environmental playlists, promoting us and them, as well as “presenting” them on our website.
In addition, all musicians must promote the Stream by Stream playlists and our vision among their fans and at concerts and encourage the environmentally oriented fans among them not only to listen to them, but also to find other eco-friendly musicians. By doing so, all the musicians can help each other find new listeners and fans.
By making this possible, musicians can exponentially grow their visibility and network with each other and drive their careers for the long term.
Thoughts about more than one way to give back
We’re also exploring other ideas to give back to nature and humanity with music. Soon, we’ll be expanding the causes musicians and listeners can support, meaning musicians can choose to support projects close to their hearts. It also allows listeners to contribute to a greener future in more than one all by streaming music.
Why should stakeholders as listeners, musicians or supporters join or help this initiative?
• For listeners: they contribute active to climate change while only listening to playlists; You keep your lifestyle but act on your future.
• For musicians: they contribute to climate change to give back while gaining more visibility on streaming services, respect and new fans
• For supporters/donators: they contribute to stream by stream to shape carbon free music culture. They can take social- cultural- and sustainable responsibility and help musicians and nature.
It's more than a circular economy. It’s a win-win for all stakeholders, the environment, musicians, supporters and individuals who love music and want to live a climate-positive life in a clean world.
This project is unique and no other organization or concept is using the artists’ royalties to let them become more successful and to finance environmental problems at the same time. The fact that this climate protection initiative doesn't cost anything, is fun and does not restrict the lifestyle of the listeners is also unique.
The only successful similar project is "Ecosia.com", using part of the searching engine "ad-income" for reforestation. Much smaller but also using the search engine ads for a better world is "gexsi.com". But within the music industry nothing similar exists so far.
Thoughts about more than one way to give back (to be developed)
We’re also exploring other ideas to give back to nature and humanity through music. We would like to expand the causes we can help and SDG goals musicians and listeners can support, meaning that musicians and listeners can choose to support projects close to their hearts. It also allows listeners to contribute to a greener, cleaner or more social future while streaming music. That's where we need further support and help.
What do we expect from "innovation booster" project support?
So far, we only were able to handle and support one project such as reforestation, but many stakeholders on all different places of the world have different concerns and needs about creating a better world in the future. In Africa they thrive for drinking water, people along the ocean care about plastic pollution and generally the globe needs reforesting for various reasons.
We want to expand our services to support all SDG concerns, bind the musicians, listeners and supporters into being more involved into deciding "what's a better world" for them. Therefore, we want to expand our "connection portal" where stakeholders register and vote for their preferred project. This way we could expand the circle and motivate listeners and musicians to involve friends by getting them to vote for their preferred projects and the use of the collected funds.
This initiative can also easily be supported by disadvantaged groups, as handicaped- or disabled persons which often use more energy and money for mobilization or care and would love to give back to nature. But also, social weak groups as young, jobless or immigrants would like to support climate protection, but don’t have extra money to donate or to pay for high margin products compensating their carbon footprint.
A big advantage of this project is, that everybody worldwide (even marginal groups) can get involved to participate in climate protection, by only having a phone, an iPad or access to a computer. Especially people with low budgets don’t have to pay any money but can still create and be part of the change.
Work package 1:
We need the help of IT experts and programmers to make a strategical positioning of the expansion, to create a realizable technical concept (to gather addresses and having people involved) and to insert (or having it programmed) this application into our website or on an app.
Work package 2:
This is also a great chance for social- and sustainable-organisations to get involved and to give their communities a chance to participate and be part of the change. Music has always connected people and therefore, we want to connect climate change with music and social aspects.
We are looking for and would like to have social persons or organization to help us connect the needs of them with our project plans. It would also be great to create a strategy and promotional material needed, to present and introduce the social and sustainable impact to other worldwide organizations.
Work package 3:
Generally this project could change the music industry and shape a carbon free and better music culture. But only if mass's of people can be taken along to create this change. This project needs visibility, to be supported by intellectual institutions, sustainability influencers and politicians.
We would love to stimulate the communication among -students and -experts, defining ways to access such key influencers.
Energy Lab could help us by identifying and introducing potential parties from the IT, social and communication sectors.
Vote, support, help and get part of realizing a dream of "music for a better world".

You want to absorb carbon, makeing climate change, have an enjoyable lifestyle and listen to fresh music?
We want to help more than 100 million eco-friendly music listeners to connect with artists around the globe, which offset their carbon footprint.
The musicians shall show their engagement, by supporting sustainability projects and donate for every song streamed. In return, the listeners endorse these artists with streams and likes to make an environmental change.
