Project Idea Description
Initial situation and problem
Since the release of the Bitcoin Blockchain, and its successor Ethereum with a more advanced implementation of the smart contract concept defined by Nick Szabo, various new Blockchains have been implemented, offering improvements compared to the first and second generations. Driven by the same visionary passion for engineering, efficiency, and a just and free internet, Yanislav Malahov, designed the æternity Blockchain, an open-source Erlang-based smart contract blockchain was born. The desire to improve the weak points of other blockchains, shaped core the features of the æternity blockchain. Oracles, naming systems, State Channels, Fork Resistance, and the Paying for Transaction just to name a few. What was yesterday but an incline of innovation — became a cornerstone of development today. Four years since the mainnet launch, we are facing great competitors who have also adopted the strengths of our blockchain. Therefore, we would like to put our capabilities on a benchmark with the help of a scientific paper to find the status quo of smart contract blockchains. Are we where we want to be? Can we still maintain our strengths? And where do we need to improve.
Aim of the work and expected results
In the context of the thesis, a set of assessments of the various blockchains has to be carried out. A performance test of scalability in terms of costs and transactions is mandatory. The thesis compares the performance of on-chain and off-chain smart contract transactions that are natively supported by the protocols. æternity Developers and Engineers will be available for the students to answer question and to support with the æternity ecosystem setup.
Desired methods; procedure
Specifically, the following tasks are to be carried out:
- Familiarisation with the topics of scalability, costs, and transaction speed
- Analysis of the individual blockchains regarding costs and speed
- Documentation of the analysis in the thesis
- Identification of advantages and disadvantages and validating the results
- Portrayal of advantages and disadvantages of the æternity blockchain compared to other blockchains
Creativity, variants, innovation
Students are free to choose their own assessment methodology. Certain categories, which will be provided once the work starts, must be covered. Blockchain specialists will be available to answer questions from students. This project will have significance for the future of æternity establishment and the results of the study will have an impact on our future roadmap – meaning that the study is, thus, giving the students an opportunity to work for and influence an innovative blockchain start-up. In addition, the students will have an opportunity to get familiar with different smart contract languages and concepts which will pave the way for possible future careers as smart contract blockchain specialists.
