Prototype for pay-per-use billing based on energy consumption data

Project Idea Metadata

Project Idea Description

Ausgangslage und Problemstellung:

More and more companies tend to sell not their electrical machines but the usage to their customers. The customer will therefore "pay-per-use" of the electrical machine. The usage of an electrical machine can be identified by analyzing the energy consumption profile and therefore is the basis of being able to bill based on the usage. SCHURTER’s IoT product can be integrated into any device powered by the mains and not consuming more than 10A. It measures the energy consumption data (current, voltage, power and power factor) of the electrical device. The system samples the values and exchanges them with the SCHURTER Cloud. Therefore, the IoT product can be used to identify the usage of an electrical machine and is therefore suitable for usage based billing.

Ziel der Arbeit:

Development of a proof of concept of a cloud service that detects, logs and reports the usage of a device as derived from the energy consumption data. The project proposes a cloud service that can be used to obtain a usage report in various applications without changes to the software. The training is configured and controlled on the existing dashboard where also the usage report can be downloaded.

Methoden, Vorgehen:

The project is based on three major questions which can be separated into subprojects:

1) How can a pattern inside the energy data-stream be detected?

2) How does the system know for which pattern to search?

3) How is the usage information visualized and presented to the user?

Kreativität, Varianten, Innovation:

The goal of this project is to develop a software prototype but not to modify the IoT device's hardware. Combine all available information from the data to find out when the device was used and therefore provide the necessary information for usage based billing.
