Initial situation and problem definition


Many hospitality organisations do not have full visibility of their deployed assets resulting in inefficiencies and revenue which is below potential. The problem faced is how to get the most from existing infrastructure in a business with low margins. In this project, together with an IoT startup based in Zurich, the student will develop the software for an IoT system to be used to solve this problem. The system consists of radio tags, a receiver, and a database for monitoring assets in real-time as they are moved around in a dynamic hospitality setting. Since this is IoT for Gastro, we call the project Gastriot.


Aim of the work and expected results


The goal of the project is to prototype a IoT management software on top of the described system which gives insights to the tagged assets, and useful analytics for the proprietors. The software should focus on doing a few well defined tasks very well, as opposed to doing many different tasks in a buggy non-performing way. The requirements will come directly from dialog with a number of partners from the hospitality industry. The student may participate in these requirements meetings, but is not expected to organize or drive these meetings with the end-customer. The deliverable of the project will be a working demonstrator of the Gastriot software, shgowing the primary functionality which has been implemented. The code, its documentation and the written report will all be made available to the start-up partner at the end of the project.


Desired methods, procedure


The student will work very closely with the IoT Hardware / Firmware expert(s) at the startup in Zurich to ensure that the developed software is tailored to the needs of the clients in the Gastro industry. In conjunction with the Expert(s) the student will define a prioritised list of software functionality, and will work methodically through this list, rather than skipping around between different objectives. that way the student is enabled to have meaningful deliverables at the project end.


The student will have to build up a good understanding of the physical system, in particular the sensors, how they are deployed, the means of communication and how they all fit together in an IoT system. Together with the use-case requirements, this understanidng of the underlying physical system will allow the definition and development of a realistic IoT management software.


This is a front-end SW development project. The industry partner is agnostic to the Software development environment or tools which the student chooses to use for the implementation of this project, provided it conforms to accepted contemporary software development standards, e.g. using Javascript, Typescript, React, NodeJS, Google Cloud, etc.


The student is required to have already taken and passed the IoT and/or Advanced IoT Module(s) at HSLU Informatik.


The project is in English. That means the documentation, the meetings, all deliverables, code commentary etc. will all be in English.


Creativity, variations, innovation


There is huge scope in this project for creativity and innovation beyond the core IoT software. This is primarily in the analytics of the gathered data in providing insights and value add for the Gastro proprietors. Any good ideas which come from the student will be embraced, and an innovative drive is warmly welcomed on this project.
