Project Idea Description
Neolec intends to solve a recurrent problem of renewable energy. Indeed, add more and more renewable energy to the energy mix is a good way to reduce our carbon footprint. However, this means more intermittent and unpredictable production and this is especially true for solar photovoltaic (PV) production. As a residential owner, you produce mostly when you are not at home, it means you cannot use/consume your own energy and that electricity will be lost. What we do, at Neolec, is we pilot all your equipment and make sure that the flow of energy is used efficiently. Your installation is nicely managed under the same ecosystem within our platform. Hence, you will reduce your carbon footprint and save on your electricity bills.
We have a clear roadmap on the type of customers we would like to target. First, B2C (villas), then B2B (residential building) then large B2B
(eco-districts and utilities) - And we are currently installing our system in a large ecodistrict in Delémont (JU) totaling 9 buildings...
The way Neolec will affect the savings is simple. In Switzerland, the electricity utility company buys back your extra (PV) production but that tariff is very low compared to the electricity you withdraw from the grid. In other words, as a PV owner you are financially incentivized to self-consume your production and Neolec helps you do that. Also too much (extra) PV creates instability to the grid and efficiency losses.
Resizing the grid infrastrctures will cost millions CHF to SwissGrid and it is one of the main challenge behind the so called “smart grids”. The resiliency of the grid is also something we address with our solution. Overall, the CO2 emissions saving is mainly due to the avoidance of “technical losses” at the grid level and better allocation of energy flow plus financial savings.
The main issue we had to tackle is the fact that each equipment has different protocols (different brand names and models, mostly not compatible between them and Installed by different professional groups who dot not have integrated the technological and ecological transition in their working processes). What we learned over the last years is that most manufacturers have not made the transition in the Big Data world. This forced us to pivot and we had to update our route to market and we try to make partnerships with them to tackle the problem (we have recently partnered with Eaton and Enphase on the PV & battery side, Alpha-Innotec on heat pumps (top 3 seller in CH), Eaton/Green-Motion (top seller in CH) for EV chargers.
In terms of future work plan and collaboration we see some potential collaboration with EnergyLab / HEIG Yverdon for the following topics:
- Air-Conditioning
With more and more heat waves, air conditioning should have the exact same issue to address as heat pumps. We have started a PoC that shows the feasibility of the optimisation but we would like to improve the algorithm that maximises the comfort and minimize the energy used in the process. That could be a good collaboration project and we could then scale the business.
- Solar thermal optimisation
Solar thermal should be much more promoted but there is a huge need to demonstrate its added value in the value chain and we, at Neolec, think performance monitoring should help as Solar thermal technology does reduce carbon footprint significantly! We could start a good collaboration and come with a great generic integrated solution based on Neolec’s platform...
Make your building Smart and finally use your full solar potential thanks to our energy optimization platform! Indeed, our objective is to monitor and connect all your relevant equipment (e.g. Battery, Heat pump, Electric vehicle) so they use your own photovoltaic production more efficiently, hence significantly reduce your carbon footprint and energy bills. With our unique patented technology we can address any type of customers' need: homes, buildings, smart-grids etc
