Green Path: transparency as an enabler for circular mobility

The automotive industry accounts for one of the largest industries in Europe, the Americas, and Asia. Not only in terms of revenue and employment numbers, but also in terms of R&D investments.

The automotive industry is facing a double challenge resulting from the required transformation to ecological mobility and the substantial funding needed to perform this transition.

When it comes to ecological transformation, the ecological footprint of cars is mainly determined by analyzing the usage phase of vehicles. Ecological transformation is therefore mainly focused on the consumption and emissions of cars. However, other phases of a vehicle’s lifecycle and respective transformation potentials, such as raw material extraction, components and car production as well as recycling and re-usage potentials to a large extent still remain uncovered.

Green Path, the cradle-to-cradle enabler for the automotive industry provides a holistic life cycle assessment of the industry, thereby fostering our understanding of the “real” environmental impact of a vehicle. With our real-time rating system of a car’s life cycle, Green Path is able to provide current and future values of vehicle materials and components as well as recycling and re-usage potentials of vehicles and their components (see illustration). By bringing in transparency to the life cycle, Green Path uncovers the real ecological footprint of vehicles. Our real-time rating system sensitizes businesses as well as customers for neglected ecological impact and underlying financial synergies from engaging in circularity within the automotive industry.

Potential Business Cases for Sustainable Automotive Lifecycles

Green Path's technology enables different business cases for sustainability in the automotive industry.

For Businesses:

Supply Chain Transparency: Companies can track the origins and lifecycle impacts of raw materials used in their vehicles, ensuring supply chains are sustainable and responsible.

Real-Time Valuation of Materials: Green Path assesses the current and future values of vehicle materials, aiding businesses in making informed material selection and design choices focused on sustainability.

Lifecycle Assessment Tools: Tools are provided to perform holistic life cycle assessments of products, enhancing the understanding of their environmental impacts.

For Consumers:

Real-Time Material Value Information: Consumers are informed of the current value of the raw materials in their vehicles.

Ownership Lifecycle Insight: Green Path provides detailed reports on recycling and reuse potential at the end of a vehicle’s life, guiding consumers towards sustainable disposal and repurchase decisions.

Benefits

Green Path's innovative approach offers significant advantages to the environment, economy, and society through a lifecycle focus and collaborative effort:

Planet: Our method addresses the ecological impact of vehicles from production to disposal, advancing the shift to a circular economy. This reduces the environmental footprint and nurtures sustainable practices.

Prosperity: Encouraging collaboration across the supply chain, Green Path fosters transparency and synergy, driving sustainability forward. This collective approach boosts business competitiveness and appeal to eco-conscious consumers and investors by cutting costs and enhancing environmental performance.

People: Green Path equips individuals with the knowledge to make informed decisions about vehicle use and end-of-life. By delivering scientifically supported insights, we enable choices that benefit both the environment and personal values, promoting healthier, sustainable communities.

Environmental Impact

GreenPath's strategy not only significantly reduces the environmental footprint of vehicles from production to disposal but also positively influences the mobility market by promoting a transition to a circular economy. This approach aligns with several key United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs):

Material Efficiency: By enhancing the reusability of vehicle components, GreenPath reduces the demand for new materials, aligning with SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production) through better resource management.

Enhanced Circularity: Facilitating collaboration across the vehicle lifecycle—from raw material suppliers to recyclers—improves recycling processes. This contributes to SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities) and SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure), fostering innovative and resilient infrastructure.

CO2 Emission Reduction: Our comprehensive lifecycle approach significantly cuts CO2 emissions, supporting SDG 13 (Climate Action) and SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being) by combating climate change and promoting cleaner air.

Additionally, GreenPath's methodology embodies SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals), emphasizing the importance of global partnerships in achieving sustainable development. GreenPath aspires to forge a path toward environmental sustainability, economic growth, and societal well-being through these efforts.

Current stage

GreenPath is in the early stages of developing a real-time rating system to accurately assess the ecological footprint of vehicles. This system is part of our broader initiative to provide the automotive industry with a holistic life cycle assessment. We are adopting a comprehensive approach by involving partners from production through to recycling, including universities for impact measurement. By collaborating with stakeholders across the entire value chain, we are diligently exploring the feasibility and effectiveness of our methods to ensure they are both robust and reliable.

The Value of the Booster to GreenPath

Our main goals are to carry out a feasibility study and analyze the value stream, laying a strong foundation for future efforts. Here’s our plan:

The potential of the Booster Program for GreenPath

GreenPath recognizes the booster program as a key opportunity to enhance our sustainable vehicle lifecycle management initiative:
