Project Idea Description
At Johnson & Johnson, we believe good health is the foundation of vibrant lives, thriving communities and forward progress. That’s why for more than 135 years, we have aimed to keep people well at every age and every stage of life. Our environmental stewardship is guided by Our Credo and inspired by our Purpose to profoundly change the trajectory of health for humanity. We know that human health and environmental health are fundamentally linked, and healthy people need a healthy planet.
Our environmental, social and governance (ESG) management approach is designed to effectively govern and manage ESG risks while also enabling us to identify opportunities that accelerate our business strategy and unlock business value to benefit a wide variety of stakeholders. As a purpose-driven company, how we deliver enduring impact is embedded in our business strategy through the execution of our ESG strategy, which frames our ambitions, informs our operations and creates accountability for our vision of the future. We focus our efforts on the areas where we are uniquely positioned to achieve the greatest impact – championing global health equity, empowering our employees and advancing environmental health.
Building on more than two decades of climate action, we are committed to sourcing 100% renewable electricity and reducing emissions across our global operations, while also working with our suppliers to do the same. Our ultimate ambition is to reach net zero carbon emissions.
- Our current goals were updated in 2024 to reflect the footprint of our two-sector company. They have been validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi)
- Source 100% of our electricity needs from renewable sources by 20251
- Reduce absolute Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions 44% by 2030 from a 2021 base year1
- 80% of J&J suppliers by emissions covering purchased goods and services and upstream transportation and distribution will have science-based targets by 2028.
Three core frameworks underscore our interactions with suppliers, what we expect of them and how we support them: Responsibility Standards for Suppliers; our Supplier Sustainability Program; and our Global Supplier Diversity & Inclusion Program.
In Switzerland, we are avoiding tons of CO2 through our efforts and collaborations within each sector as well as cross-sector work.
- J&J MedTech is working with Swiss hospitals to collect and recycle materials. This includes contaminated and non-contaminated materials from operating rooms such as single-use devices, aluminum foils and plastic tubes. Other non-contaminated waste from the hospital, estimated at around 20 tons per year is collected and recycled as much as possible in a collaboration with Mr. Green.
- J&J Innovative Medicine launched Safe Returns, a simple, safe and convenient way for patients to dispose of home-administered self-injectables. We further invest in a facility in Switzerland that should allow us to disassemble devices collected and recycle some of the materials.
From 2018 we achieved sourcing 100% of our electricity needs in Switzerland from renewable sources. In 2025 we are sourcing the equivalent of 100% of our electricity needs for our operations1 in Europe2, The United States3 and Canada from renewable sources. These milestones were reached thanks to renewable electricity deals for off-site wind and solar in Spain and Texas (U.S.), in addition to our existing on-site and off-site electricity projects.
- We are developing decarbonisation roadmaps for our biggest, footprint driving sites. The roadmaps present a way forward to achieve our 2030 public goals and 2045 ambition.
- We are working on a sustainable mobility program that aims to incentivise employees to change their commute patterns and choose more sustainable modes of transport.
- Our Zug location is certified LEED Platinum and Minergie Eco.
- An internal network of passionate employees is active in Zug, inspiring colleagues and driving activations such as waste and energy reduction campaigns, environmental quizzes, launching and hosting an internal second-hand store and tree planting.
- Additional activities to further reduce emissions are being driven through both internal and external partners. One example is a food tracking system in our canteen, which allowed us to reduce food waste by 50% since implemented in 2022.
Check our website for more details about our sustainability efforts in Switzerland.
